Visit to the Montgommery Castle
Night guided tour
Guided tour of the castle
Built in the early 1600s, the Château de Ducey (MH) today retains its original decor, its staircase and its monumental fireplaces.
A tour guide will accompany you through all the accessible rooms of the castle, evoking the tumultuous life of Gabriel de Montgommery, Protestant lord of Ducey who marked the history of France and the work carried out in the castle by the various owners over the centuries.
History in brief
Ducey Castle is located on the banks of the Sélune.
Listed as a Historic Monument, it was built in the first twenty years of the 17th century under the reign of Henri IV, by Gabriel II de Montgommery, the son of the regicide.
The ceilings decorated with paintings, imposing fireplaces and a monumental staircase bear witness to an ambitious and innovative architectural project by a powerful Protestant lord whose family left its mark on the history of France.
When the small story rubs shoulders with the big one
Gabriel I of Montgomery, captain of Henry II's Scottish guard, is still known today for having accidentally killed
the King of France during a tournament in 1559.
Gabriel then went into exile at the English court, then converted to Protestantism upon his return to Ducey and became one of the most loyal Huguenot captains attached to Henri de Navare and Condé.
He was executed in France in 1574 on the orders of Catherine de Medici, widow of Henry II, who never forgave him for the tournament accident.
